EI recipients in Alberta almost double last year

EI recipients in Alberta almost double last year

The number of people collecting unemployment insurance in Alberta is now the highest since November 2009. The federal government is making EI more accessible in most of the province which will boost the number of recipients in the coming months. The number of beneficiaries in Edmonton jumped 2.4%, versus 1.7% in Calgary.  However, the area of Edmonton-Leduc do not qualify for EI extension since their unemployment rate did not reach the 2% increase yr/yr threshold spelled out in the federal budget.

The number of EI recipients also jumped sharply in New Brunswick (+4.2%), Newfoundland (+3.2%) and Saskatchewan (+2.4%). Declines were seen in Quebec and BC.
