Breaking records in Canada's crude trade with the USA

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the US imported a record 3.867 million bbl/day of Canadian crude in May, with exports to the Midwest (PADD 2) reaching a record 2.574 million bbl/day.

US imports from Mexico and Venezuela, Alberta's main competitors for heavy oil supply, continue to fall, dropping by another 22,000 and 71,000 bbl/day, respectively.

A record number of those barrels were shipped by rail, estimated at about 200,000 bbl/day in May. According to the National Energy Board (NEB), that's a new record high.

About half of those rail shipments were headed to the Gulf Coast (PADD 3), a region greatly underserved by pipeline from Canada. Rail exports to the West Coast (PADD 5) also hit a record 44,000 bbl/day.
