Weekly US Oil Inventory Report

Weekly US Oil Inventory Report

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending October 6, 2017:
  • US commercial crude oil inventories fell 2.7 million barrels. Stockpiles in the Gulf Coast declined 4.5 million barrels, offsetting a 1.8 million barrel build on the West Coast.
  • Inventories at Cushing also rose another 1.3 million barrels last week, now up 7.5 million barrels since early August.
  • Another 1.2 million barrels were drawn out of Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) last week.
  • Crude production dipped 87,000 bbl/day, most likely due to evacuations in the Gulf of Mexico ahead of Hurricane Nate. The hurricane took over 1 million bbl/day offline through the weekend, some of which will be reflected in next week's inventory report.
  • Refinery utilization improved slightly to 89.2% overall. East Coast refineries saw a big increase, rising from 85.1% to 95.2% while West Coast utilization rates fell from 93.0% to 88.3%.
  • Gasoline inventories unexpectedly rose 2.5 million barrels despite lower production and a big increase in exports. Gasoline consumption rose from 9.2 to 9.5 million bbl/day, while imports were relatively unchanged. After declining through much of 2017, gasoline stockpiles have risen over 5 million barrels since the middle of September.
  • Distillate inventories declined for the sixth week in a row, falling 1.5 million barrels last week.
