Weekly US Oil Inventory Report

Weekly US Oil Inventory Report

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending September 29, 2017:
  • Total US commercial stockpiles fell 6 million barrels overall. The biggest declines were seen in the Gulf Coast (4.4 million) and West Coast (3.3 million) regions.
  • Another 950,000 barrels of crude were drawn out of Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR).
  • Refinery utilization on the East Coast fell sharply (from 93.8% to 85.1%) as rough seas prevented the offloading of foreign crude cargos last week. Refinery utilization in the Gulf Coast improved slightly from 84.9% to 85.6%.
  • Production out of Alaska ticked up by 14,000 bbl/day. No change was reported from the Lower 48 region.
  • Crude exports surged to 2 million bbl/day, blowing past the previous record high. Imports decline 3% overall but imports from Canada rose slightly to 3.56 million bbl/day.
  • Gasoline imports decline 17% to 862,000 bbl/day but stockpiles rose another 1.6 million barrels last week despite little change in production.
  • Distillate exports surged 25% to 1.4 million bbl/day, driving inventories lower by 2.6 million barrels.
  • Total product consumed fell almost 7% to 19.7 million bbl/day. Demand for both gasoline and jet fuel declined sharply last week, down 3% and 17.5%, respectively.
