Weekly US Oil Inventory Report

Weekly US Oil Inventory Report

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending September 22, 2017:
  • Total US commercial crude oil inventories declined 1.8 million barrels. About 4.8 million of those barrels came out of Gulf Coast stockpiles while inventories rose in the Midwest and West Coast. Inventories at Cushing also rose by 1.2 million barrels.
  • Another 800,000 barrels of crude were taken out of Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) last week.
  • Crude oil production ticked higher to 9.55 million bbl/day, now back to the highs of mid-2015.
  • Crude exports surged 60% to a record 1.5 million bbl/day, as ports re-open for business and the WTI discount to Brent increases global demand for US crude.
  • US imports of Canadian crude continue to recover, now at about 3.5 million bbl/day.
  • Refinery throughput jumped by 1 million bbl/day to 16.2 million bbl/day as refineries in the Gulf Coast return to normal post-Harvey. Refinery utilization in the Gulf Coast improved to almost 85% last week.
  • Gasoline imports jumped over 50% to 1 million bbl/day, causing gasoline stockpiles to rise 1.1 million barrels. Distillate inventories declined 814,000 barrels on slightly higher exports.
  • Product consumption rates also continue to recover, gaining another 3% last week to 21.1 million bbl/day.
