Oil prices post gains despite strengthening greenback

Summary of today's energy market action:
  • Despite a gain in the greenback, oil prices rose almost 1% on news that Saudi Arabia has cut output for the month of July and US sanctions against Iran take effect Tuesday morning.
  • Western Canadian Select (WCS) gained 1.4% but the heavy oil discount remains unchanged from Friday's close.
  • Most energy subsectors on the S&P 500 posted gains for the day, led higher by Baker Hughes (BHGE +3.0%) and Kinder Morgan (KMI 1.9%).
  • Note that the TSX was closed for Civic Holiday.
