Oil prices stumble on smaller-than-expected US crude drawdowns and build in gasoline stockpiles

Summary of today's energy market action:
  • Oil prices declined across the board on lower than expected drawdowns in US crude inventories.
  • Gasoline prices also pulled back 4% after the EIA reported a build in stockpiles, a first since late June.
  • Western Canadian Select (WCS) broke down another 6% today, falling back to the lows of early March.
  • The TSX energy basket averaged a loss of 0.7% today, led lower by smaller cap E&Ps. Heavy-weights Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ -1.1%) and Cenovus Energy (CVE -2.3%) also dragged the sub-sector lower.
  • The US energy sector posted an 0.8% loss for the day, reversing yeasterday's gains. Declines were also led by E&Ps on lower crude prices.
  • Despite the drop in gasoline prices, the US refining sub-sector once again bucked the trend, with most posting gains for the day.
