Oil prices spike higher as U.S. aims to cut Iranian exports to zero
Today's energy market action:
As expected, the Trump Administration announced an end to all Iranian crude import waivers, once the current waivers expire on May 1. Last November, the US government granted 6-month waivers to eight countries, including Iran's largest buyers - China and India. The Americans say they have been working with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to make sure oil markets are "adequately supplied."
The news sent oil prices shooting up almost 3%. Differentials on Canadian crude were little changed for the day.
Gasoline and heating oil also rose about 2%. Henry Hub ended the day almost 3% higher.
Today's treasury, currency and equity market action:
Treasury and currency markets were little changed on Monday. Markets in Europe, the UK and Hong Kong were closed for Easter Monday.
In New York, the NYSE and S&P 500 were roughly unchanged. Energy was the best performing sector in US markets, rising over 2%.
In Toronto, the TSX slipped 0.2%, despite a 1.6% gain in energy stocks.
Today's notable energy news:
BP and its partners announced the sanctioning of their US$6 billion Azeri Central East development offshore Azerbaijan. The project includes a new offshore platform and facilities designed to process up to 100,000 bbl/day of oil. The project is expected to come online in 2023.
Energy Transfer and Phillips 66 Partners announced a non-binding open season for expanded capacity on the Bayou Bridge Pipeline System. Bayou Bridge transports 480,000 bbl/day of crude to refineries along the Gulf Coast.
Chevron has asked Petrobras to confirm its Pasadena refinery in Texas is fully-functioning, before it takes possession of the facility. Chevron purchased the 112,200 bbl/day facility for US$350 million last January. The company was set to take over operatorship of the refinery earlier this month, but the transfer was delayed due to a planned maintenance turnaround.
ExxonMobil announced a 20-year sales and purchase agreement with Zhejiang Provincial Energy for 1 million t/y of LNG. Zhejiang Energy will build an LNG import terminal in China's Ningbo-Zhoushan region.
Houston-based McDermott International announced a contract by Kuwait Petroleum Corp, for its Petrochemical Refinery Integration Project in Al Zour, Kuwait. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

CEO Jeff Miller says he believes "the worst in the pricing deterioration is now behind us."
Texas-based Range Resources reported a net profit of US$1.4 million, including a US$62 million hedging loss. Revenues rose 1% y/y to US$748 million. First quarter production averaged 2.26 Bcfe/day.
