Crude prices and energy stocks diverge, as traders bet on higher oil prices
Today's energy market update:
A mixed day in energy markets on Monday, as most energy stocks moved higher, while crude prices mostly moved lower.
Brent declines 1.7%, while WTI retreated 1.1%. Gasoline prices declined 2.4%, but are still managing to hold above US$1.70 a gallon.
Canadian Light dipped just 0.1%, as its differential to WTI narrowed by US$0.50 to US$6.50 a barrel.
WCS fell almost 4%, as its discount widened by almost US$1 to US$14. All Canadian benchmarks are now trading on the August contract, due to July contract expiry last Friday. WTI also switches to the August contract on Friday.
Today's currency and equity market update:
Bond prices held the course on Monday, as traders await news from this week's 2-day FOMC meeting, which begins tomorrow. The US dollar was little changed for the day, while the loonie gained about 0.1%.
A relatively quiet start to the trading week, with most global markets ending Monday flat to slightly higher. The NYSE dipped 0.1%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.1%. In Toronto, the TSX gained 0.3%.
Despite lower oil prices, SPX energy stocks rose 0.9%, while TSX energy stocks gained almost 1.5%, making it the best performing sector in Canada. Producers and services stocks outperformed on Monday, while Canadian midstream names were the biggest losers.
Most foreign ADRs listed on the NYSE bucked the uptrend and posted another day of losses.

EQM Midstream Partners now says costs on its Mountain Valley Pipeline will rise from about US$4.6 billion to as much as US$5.0 billion. Ongoing legal and regulatory challenges will delay the in service date to the middle of next year. The 300-mile long pipeline is designed to deliver 2 bcf/day of natural gas from West Virginia to Virginia, and was originally scheduled to begin service at the end of 2018. Mountain Valley is owned jointly with NextEra Energy, Consolidated Edison, AltaGas and RGC Resources.
Oil field services firms C&J Energy Services and Keane Group announced a US$1.8 billion "all-stock merger of equals." C&J shareholders will receive 1.6149 Keane shares for each C&J common stock owned.
Midstream giant Williams Co completed its US$3.8 billion joint-venture with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, which will own the Ohio Valley Midstream system and the Utica East Ohio Midstream system. Williams will continue to operate the assets.
The Dutch government has cut output from the Groningen natural gas field by another 20% due to more seismic activity in the northern part of the country. Operators Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil will be limited to 12.8 bcm/yr, down from a previous quota of 15.9 bcm/yr, and well below its 2014 peak of 54 bcm/yr.
Equinor and partners Ineos and Faroe Petroleum announced another two oil and gas discoveries in the Norwegian Sea. According to Reuters, the company came up dry in an Arctic exploration well, located in the Barents Sea.
