Group of business leaders send open letter to Alberta premier
A group representing 15 associations of contractors, retailers, drillers and energy producers has sent an open letter to the premier, voicing concerns for the Alberta economy. Although they acknowledge that low oil prices are partly to blame, the business leaders note that recent increases in corporate and personal income taxes, new carbon taxes and pending increases to the minimum wage are undermining business confidence and competitiveness in the province. The group is seeking a moratorium on any new policies and tax increases.
Premier Notley responded by reminding Albertans that the NDP was elected on a platform of environmental responsibility and tax increases for corporations and wealthier individuals. The Alberta government is due to release their budget next month.
