Crude stockpiles continue to rise, now up 28 million barrels from lows of mid-September

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending October 19, 2018:
  • Commercial crude oil inventories rose by another 6.4 million barrels last week, the fifth consecutive weekly gain, with increases seen across all PADDs. Cushing stockpiles (included in Midwest figures) also rose another 1.4 million barrels.
  • Overall refinery utilization nudged higher last week, rising from 88.8% to 89.2%. After several weeks of declines, utilization in the Midwest has finally started to recover, rising from 70% to 74%.
  • Total US crude production was reported unchanged at 10.9 million bbl/day.
  • Total crude imports rose 1% to 7.7 million bbl/day while exports increased 22% to 2.2 million bbl/day. Imports of Canadian crude declined 262,000 bbl/day to 3.2 million bbl/day.
  • Gasoline inventories fell to a 10-month low, declining another 4.8 million barrels last week. Production dropped 4% to 10 million bbl/day while consumption rose 1.5% to 9.3 million bbl/day.
  • Distillate inventories declined for the fifth week in a row, falling another 2.3 million barrels last week. Production rose 3% to 5 million bbl/day while consumption increased 6% to 4 million bbl/day.
  • Total petroleum products consumption rose almost 8% to 21.5 million bbl/day.
