Refinery utilization rates in the Midwest jump to 98%

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending December 7, 2018:
  • Commercial crude oil inventories declined 1.2 million barrels. Most of the drawdowns were seen on the East Coast (PADD 1) and West Coast (PADD 5).
  • Inventories in Cushing rose by 1.1 million barrels while the Gulf Coast (PADD 3) saw a gain of 3.8 million barrels, reversing some of last week's big declines.
  • Overall refinery utilization dipped to 95.1%, due to a big decline on the East Coast. Utilization rates in the Midwest jumped to almost 98%.
  • Crude production out of the Lower 48 declined by 100,000 bbl/day, to 11.1 million bbl/day.
  • Crude imports rose 174,000 bbl/day to 7.4 million bbl/day, while exports fell 30% to 2.3 million bbl/day.
  • Imports of Canadian crude were roughly unchanged last week at 3.5 million bbl/day.
  • Gasoline inventories rose 2.1 million barrels as production jumped 8% to 10.5 million bbl/day.
  • Distillate stockpiles declined 1.5 million barrels as consumption rose 10% to 4.5 million bbl/day.
  • Overall US petroleum consumption also rose 5% to 21.5 million bbl/day.
