Weekly US Oil Inventory Report

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending September 21, 2018:
  • After 5 weeks of declines, commercial crude oil inventories rose by 1.9 million barrels, with the largest gains seen in the Midwest, up 665,000 barrels, including a 461,000 barrel build in Cushing.
  • Refinery utilization fell from 95.4% to 90.4% with crude runs also declining 5.2% to 16.51 million bbl/day. The Midwest region saw the largest decrease as several refineries begin maintenance turnarounds, which is expected to last for several weeks.
  • Total US crude production rose to a record 11.1 million bbl/day last week as output from the Lower 48 also increased to a record 10.6 million bbl/day.
  • Crude imports decreased almost 3% to 7.8 million bbl/day with exports rising 12% to 2.6 million bbl/day. Imports of Canadian crude fell 213,000 bbl/day to 3.285 million bbl/day.
  • Gasoline stockpiles increased by 1.5 million barrels, reversing drawdowns from the previous week. Production declined 4% to 9.8 million bbl/day as consumption dropped 5% to 9.0 million bbl/day.
  • Gasoline imports rose more than 50% to 863,000 bbl/day. Exports also rose 38% to almost a 1 million bbl/day.
  • Distillate inventories decreased by 2.2 million barrels as production dropped by 8.5% to just below 5 million bbl/day. Consumption rose 3% to 4.3 million bbl/day, while exports dipped 13% to 1.15 million bbl/day.
