US refineries run flat-out, sending product stockpiles higher

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending December 28, 2018:
  • Commercial crude oil inventories were unchanged last week, as gains on the East Coast and Midwest offset a 3 million barrel drawdown on the West Coast.
  • Inventories in Cushing rose 641,000 barrels.
  • Overall refinery utilization topped 97%, with improvements seen across all five PADDs. Gulf Coast (PADD 3) refineries were reported operating at 99.4% of capacity last week.
  • Total US output was unchanged at 11.7 million bbl/day.
  • Crude imports declined 3.4% to 7.4 million bbl/day, while exports sank 25% to 2.2 million bbl/day.
  • Imports of Canadian crude fell 135,000 bbl/day to 3.3 million bbl/day.
  • Gasoline inventories rose for the fifth week in a row, gaining another 7 million barrels. Distillate stockpiles also rose 9.5 million barrels on higher production and lower consumption.
  • Overall petroleum consumption declined 8% to 19.1 million bbl/day.
