Crude stockpiles surge in the Midwest and West Coast, reversing drawdowns from the previous week

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending March 1, 2019:
  • Commercial crude oil inventories increased by 7.1 million barrels, mostly seen in the Midwest (up 3.4 million) and West Coast (up 3.7 million). The Cushing storage terminal saw a build of 873,000 barrels.
  • Total US crude production unchanged at 12.1 million bbl/day.
  • Crude exports declined by over 550,000 bbl/day to 2.8 million bbl/day, while imports jumped by 1 million bbl/day to 7 million bbl/day.
  • Imports of Canadian crude rose over 500,000 bbl/day to 3.55 million bbl/day.
  • Overall refinery utilization rose slightly to 87.5%.
  • Gasoline inventories declined by 4.3 million barrels while distillate stockpiles dropped by 2.4 million barrels.
  • Overall petroleum consumption dropped by almost 1 million bbl/day to 20.5 million bbl/day.
