US imports of Cdn crude rebound despite refinery outages in the Midwest

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending May 17, 2019:
  • Commercial crude oil inventories increased by 4.7 million barrels last week, the second consecutive week of gains. The Midwest (PADD 2) rose 3.3 million barrels, including 1.3 million barrel gain at the Cushing storage hub. Gulf Coast (PADD 3) inventories also increased by 2.9 million barrels.
  • Total US crude production ticked up 100,000 bbl/day to 12.2 million bbl/day.
  • Crude exports declined 13% to 2.9 million bbl/day and imports fell 9% to 6.9 million bbl/day.
  • Imports of Canadian crude rose 200,000 bbl/day to 3.7 million bbl/day, the highest since January.
  • Overall US refinery utilization dipped slightly below 90% last week. Refineries in the Midwest, the largest buyers of Canadian crude, declined from 87.3% to 82.7%.
  • Gasoline inventories increased 3.7 million barrels last week, while gasoline consumption increased 3% to 9.4 million bbl/day.
  • Distillate stockpiles ticked up 768,000 barrels, while consumption dropped 8% to 3.8 million bbl/day.
