Gulf of Mexico outages sinks total US output to 8-month low

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending July 19, 2019:
  • Commercial crude oil inventories dropped by 10.8 million barrels last week. Most of the declines were seen in the Gulf Coast (PADD 3), likely due to production outages in the Gulf of Mexico caused by Hurricane Barry. Stockpiles in Cushing also fell by 430,000 barrels.
  • Crude production out of the Lower 48 decreased by 700,000 bbl/day to just 10.8 million bbl/day. Total US output was reported at 11.3 million bbl/day, about 1 million bbl/day below normal.
  • Crude exports rose 760,000 bbl/day to 3.3 million bbl/day, while imports rose 200,000 bbl/day to just over 7 million bbl/day.
  • Imports of Canadian crude rose 190,000 bbl/day to 3.7 million bbl/day.
  • Overall US refinery utilization declined to 93.1% last week to lower crude runs in the Gulf Coast. Refineries in the Midwest reported operating at 99.5% of capacity.
  • Gasoline inventories dipped 226,000 barrels, while distillate stockpiles increased by 613,000 barrels.
  • Overall consumption of petroleum products rose by 1.3 million bbl/day to 21.6 million bbl/day.
