Crude inventories move higher for the second week in a row

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending August 9, 2019:
  • Commercial crude oil inventories rose by 1.6 million barrels last week, a second consecutive week of gains. Most of the increases were seen in the Gulf Coast and West Coast (up 1.8 and 2.2 million barrels, respectively), while the Midwest region saw a decline of 3.3 million barrels. Stockpiles in Cushing, included in Midwest figures, fell by 2.5 million barrels.
  • Total US crude output was reported unchanged at 12.3 million bbl/day.
  • Crude exports rose 818,000 bbl/day to 2.7 million bbl/day, while imports increased 8% to 7.7 million bbl/day.
  • Imports of Canadian crude jumped another 120,000 bbl/day, ending the week at an estimated 3.85 million bbl/day.
  • Refinery utilization dropped from 96.4% to 94.8% last week, with all PADDs reporting declines.
  • Gasoline inventories decreased by 1.4 million barrels, while distillate stockpiles also dropped by 1.9 million barrels.
  • Total consumption of petroleum products rose about 3% to a very healthly 22.1 million bbl/day.
