Crude stockpiles unexpectedly rise for the first time in 8 weeks

Summary of this week's US Petroleum Status Report for the week ending August 2, 2019:
  • Commercial crude oil inventories increased by 2.4 million barrels last week. The Gulf Coast (PADD 3) reported a gain of 5.5 million barrels, while stockpiles in the Midwest declined by 2.4 million barrels.
  • Total US crude output nudged up to 12.3 million bbl/day.
  • Crude exports fell 709,000 bbl/day to 1.9 million bbl/day, while imports increased 485,000 bbl/day to 7.1 million bbl/day.
  • Imports of Canadian crude increased by 265,000 bbl/day to 3.7 million bbl/day.
  • Refinery utilization jumped to 96.4% last week, as refineries in the Midwest and Rocky Mountains operate at full capacity.
  • Gasoline inventories increased by 4.4 million barrels, while distillate stockpiles rose by 1.5 million barrels.
  • Total consumption of petroleum products increased about 1% to 21.5 million bbl/day.
